93. The road is the D73, facing north-west towards the River Ancre and away from Thiepval Village. This is the sunken road across which the Ulster Division attacked on 1st July, 1916. On the skyline to the left is Thiepval Wood with Connaught Road Cemetery in front of it. On the other side of the road are the trees which surround the Ulster Tower.
94. At the edge of Thiepval Wood - Connaught Road Cemetery showing the Cross of Remembrance.
95. View from Connaught Road Cemetery looking north. In the distance, at the top of the slope, is Mill Road Cemetery. It was up this hill that men of the Ulster Division attacked the Schwaben Redoubt on 1st July, 1916.
96. Mill Road Cemetery. The headstones here have to be laid flat because of subsidence caused by the old dug-outs and tunnels of the Schwaben Redoubt beneath.
97. The Ulster Tower. The Ulster Tower was raised as a memorial to the soldiers of the Ulster Division who fought in the Great War. Mostly built by public subscription, it was officially opened on 19th November, 1921 - almost five years to the day after the official end to the Battle of the Somme. It is a very close copy of Helen's Tower which stands in the grounds of the Clandeboye Estate which is located in Northern Ireland east of Belfast and near the seaside town of Bangor. Many of the men of the Ulster Division trained in the estate before moving to England and then France early in 1916.

101. The Thiepval Memorial. Memorial to the Missing. Built on the site of the former Thiepval Chateau and now dominating the surrounding countryside, this huge arched memorial was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 31st July, 1932. On its white stone panels are inscribed over 73,000 names of both British and French soldiers who were killed in the Somme Battlefield between 1916 - 17, and who have no known graves.
